At Science of Sound (SOS), Easter is more than just about chocolate eggs—it’s about using creativity, science, and design to make something special! One of the exciting activities we’re offering this year at our Easter Science Holiday Camps is our Egg Design Challenge, where children aged 5-12 will explore art, engineering, and scientific principles as they work to design their very own egg creations.
In this hands-on activity, children will get the chance to let their imaginations run wild while learning about the science behind materials, structures, and patterns. The Egg Design Challenge is all about combining creativity with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), giving kids the opportunity to express themselves while learning valuable concepts in the process.
Let’s crack open the details of this egg-cellent Easter challenge and see what makes it so special!
The Egg Design Challenge is an Easter-themed activity where children are tasked with creating, decorating, and designing their own eggs. But there’s a twist! They’ll also be working to make sure their eggs are not only beautiful but structurally sound enough to survive various challenges.
Children will explore a variety of techniques, including:
This activity blends art, creativity, and engineering to give children a well-rounded experience in both design and problem-solving.
The Egg Design Challenge isn’t just about making beautiful eggs—it’s also a fun way for children to learn about how science and design go hand in hand. As they decorate their eggs, they’ll be thinking about how to make their designs functional and protective.
Here are a few science concepts we’ll explore during the activity:
Fun Fact:
Did you know that eggs are naturally strong because of their oval shape? The egg’s curved structure helps distribute pressure evenly, making it more resistant to cracking—unless, of course, you drop it from a high place!
The fun doesn’t stop with decorating! Once children have finished designing their eggs, it’s time to test them in the ultimate experiment—the Egg Drop Challenge.
In this thrilling part of the activity, children will drop their eggs from a certain height to see if their designs are strong enough to protect the egg from breaking. This is where the science of impact comes into play. Children will learn about how energy is transferred during a fall and how their designs can help absorb or redirect that energy to keep their eggs safe.
Here’s how we test the egg designs:
This fun, hands-on activity encourages children to experiment, learn from their mistakes, and improve their designs in real time.
Fun Activity for Home:
Try an Egg Drop Challenge at home! All you need is a raw egg, some protective materials (like cotton, foam, or even cardboard), and a place to drop it from (a table or staircase works great). Let your child design their egg protection, then drop it and see what happens. Did the egg survive? What could be improved for next time?
While engineering and science are key parts of the Egg Design Challenge, there’s also plenty of room for creativity! Children will have access to a wide range of art supplies, allowing them to turn their plain eggs into vibrant works of art.
Kids will be encouraged to:
By combining creativity with design and engineering, children will leave the camp with both a beautiful egg and a greater understanding of how to make their creations functional.
The Egg Design Challenge isn’t just about having fun—it’s also a fantastic way for children to develop valuable STEM skills while encouraging artistic expression. Here’s what children will gain from participating in the challenge:
This activity provides a balanced approach to STEM learning, blending science, engineering, and creativity in a way that’s engaging for kids of all ages.

Our Egg Design Challenge at the Science of Sound Easter Holiday Camps is the perfect blend of creativity, science, and fun! Children will get the chance to decorate and design their own eggs, learning about material science, engineering, and structural integrity in the process. By putting their designs to the test in the Egg Drop Challenge, they’ll discover how to think critically and improve their creations.
If your child loves getting creative and exploring the world of STEM, sign them up for our Science of Sound holiday camps. Find out more about our upcoming camps here and let your child experience the joy of creating, designing, and learning this Easter!
